Turning Bear Mason's
paintings sparkle with eye-pleasing beauty, capture attention and tune
hearts to the majesty of God as spoken through His language of nature.
He says, "My purpose is to promote thought, mood and emotion
by painting the masterpiece of God's creation." |

Mason's theme is "life in the land". He said, "Throughout my life I have
enjoyed, beyond words, experiences in the land. The revelation of life
that God shows me in the forests is meant to be shared. I am not a
writer, a poet or a singer, so I paint."
One of Turning Bears favorite quotes is by H.R. Rookmaaker in Modern
Art and the Death of a Culture. "Art never copies nature, but always
portrays reality in a human way. This type of painting does not copy
nature as a camera would, but depicts a human experience, a human
understanding, an insight and emotion into what the truth about reality
is."
Turning Bear says, "God has given me a hunger to know Him through His
truth, that is through His Word and His creation. As He reveals that
truth to me, I become more effective in my painting and in giving the
glory to Him as the Master Artist and Creator." Mason has said he would
explode if he didn't share at least some of the experiences he has had
in the land, as God has given him this talent to share God's glory with
others.
Mason was born in Anchorage, Alaska (1954) and traveled extensively
until 1988 when he and his wife, White Feather Song, took up residence
in a log cabin on Baldy Mountain north of Plains, Montana. He also has a
studio next to the Tucson Mountain range in Arizona. Turning Bear was
given his first set of oil paints and started painting when he was nine
years old.
Turning Bear Mason's paintings are currently displayed in 18 states and
Canada. He also scrimshaws wildlife on knife handles and jewelry. His
scrimshaw artistry has been published in several knife magazines. He has
been working extensively for Dude/Guest Ranches, Resorts, and National
Parks since 1995, i.e. painting oils on commission of the landscapes and
then having limited edition prints made of them.
"For since the creation of the world, God's invisible qualities, His
eternal power and divine nature have been clearly seen, being understood
from what has been made so that men are without excuse." - Romans 1:20
