Oil Painting

Instructor: Professional Artist, TurningBear Mason

There are various levels of classes fitting for all art students from beginner to advanced. It is up to you to choose the course that matches your desire and skill level. If you are a beginner, knowing how to draw is a Bedrock necessity to all art disciplines. Beginners are highly encouraged to take the drawing classes. Please see the Drawing Classes page.

Courses are available in either a workshop format of two six hour days, or a class format of four three hour days.

These classes will encourage confidence via practicing observation of form, values, and hues of the subject. We will learn how to use complementary colors together for shadowing and lighting and how to mix the primary colors together to create a verity of secondary and tertiary colors to promote mood and reality.

Monochromatic Painting

Monochromatic exercises are designed to help the student focus on the value (shades of light and dark) of the subject and how to turn form in paint and create the illusion of the third dimension. This study clearly reveals any problems in rendering and helps isolate the areas the student needs to develop further. Understanding how to render value is a benchmark of knowledge necessary for solving more complex problems. From here the student can turn his or her attention to land/seascapes, cast, still-life and figure paintings.
